CAMARILLO : City Delays Naming Goals Committee

Share

The Camarillo City Council on Wednesday delayed appointment of a long-awaited citizens Community Goals Committee so more women and minorities can be added. The council also decided to expand the committee, which was going to have 25 voting members and four alternates, to 40 members and five alternates.

To find more women and minorities, the council decided to review the original pool of 152 applications. Councilmen Ken Gose and Michael Morgan had winnowed the original pool to 29 nominees, of whom only six were women.

“It’s really overbalanced on men and I think we need to address that,” Mayor Stanley J. Daily said.

Vice Mayor Charlotte Craven said she favored reopening the entire application process to attract more people under age 25. Only one person from that age group applied and was not chosen.

To aid the committee, which is charged with setting the city’s planning and lifestyle objectives, council members approved hiring a facilitator. Tony Boden, community development and planning director, estimated the cost at $5,000.

Members will look at such issues as the city’s growth ordinance, which controls residential development; greenbelt agreements between city and county officials, and the planning and subdivision law for dealing with the General Plan.
