The Rev. Jamie W. Buckingham, 59, an evangelist and columnist for Charisma, the leading Pentecostal magazine, who was a constant critic in the late 1980s of the behavior of such fellow preachers as Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart and others, saying, “If we don’t discipline ourselves, God will make certain we are disciplined by others.” Buckingham was senior pastor of the 2,000-member, nondenominational Tabernacle Church in Melbourne, Fla. His 42 books included biographies of several evangelical leaders and he was editor of the magazine Ministry Today. He also was author and editor of “Power for Living,” a controversial 1983 book on Christianity endorsed in a nationwide campaign by such celebrities as Dallas Cowboys Coach Tom Landry and singer Pat Boone. In Palm Bay, Fla., on Feb. 17 of liver cancer.
