BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Comebacks Needed for Team to Win

Manager Buck Rodgers reeled off the names:

“Lance Parrish. Dick Schofield. Gary Gaetti. Alvin Davis. Hubie Brooks. Von Hayes.

“This camp will be a little more interesting than most,” Rodgers said. “So many guys are coming off poor years for one reason or another. You take all those guys, what they did last year vs. lifetime or track record, and there’s a notable difference. That’s why I think it will be pretty interesting.

“A lot of guys here have something to prove--not just to us, but to themselves.”

Parrish, 35, a .257 hitter for his career before last season, hit .216, a drop of 52 points from the previous season.

Schofield, 29, hit .225, 30 points below his career-high .255 the season before.

Gaetti, 33, drove in 66 runs, his lowest total in six years.

Davis, 31, signed with the Angels as a free agent after hitting .221 with 12 home runs for the Seattle Mariners last year. His average the previous season was .289 with 21 homers.

Brooks, 35, acquired in a trade with the New York Mets in December, has recovered from neck surgery after the injury contributed to his hitting a career-low .238.

Hayes, 33, who came to the Angels from the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade, played in a career-low 77 games because of a broken wrist and did not hit a home run. His personal-best is 26 homers in 1989.

“If they have the same kind of years, we’re not going to win,” Rodgers said. “You go ask those guys if they’re satisfied. I’d be surprised if any one of them says they are. If they are, we might as well release ‘em. That ain’t gonna be good enough.”

Outfielder Jose Gonzalez, who alerted the team that he is having visa difficulty traveling from the Dominican Republic, is the only one of 54 players who did not report for the first full-squad workout. He is expected this week.
