Filner to Run for 50th District House Seat

Share

San Diego City Councilman Bob Filner announced Saturday that he will contest the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives in the new 50th congressional district.

The district extends from the mid-city area of San Diego south through National City and Chula Vista to the international border, and is heavily Democratic in voter registration.

Filner will face several challengers who already have signed up for the June primary: former San Diego congressman Jim Bates, the area’s representative for a decade before losing two years ago to U.S. Rep. Randy (Duke) Cunningham (R-Chula Vista), who is moving to the North County area to run in a new district; State Sen. Waddie Deddeh (D-Chula Vista), a veteran of state politics; and Greg Akili, a longtime San Diego African-American community organizer.
