Communities in Transition

I found your series regarding the changes that the recent influx of Latino immigrants have generated within South Los Angeles to be very interesting. As a black married to a Latina immigrant it is my personal observation that the majority of the immigrants are a credit to our society.

However, I am certainly concerned about the immigrants who locate mobile home trailers on the same lot with single-family dwellings, make illegal electrical power and sewer connections and then load these trailers up with relatives and friends as a place of residence. These types of situations depress property values and are unsafe. There have been some fires caused by these makeshift dwellings, and recently one individual lost his life in a trailer fire. It appears that this type of activity has the blessings of some of our elected officials and building inspectors.
