The Capistrano Unified School District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony March 13 for a new high school in the planned community of Aliso Viejo.

The groundbreaking ceremony, originally scheduled for Feb. 11, was canceled because of rain.

Aliso Niguel High School will be built near the intersection of Laguna Hills Drive and Aliso Creek Road and will enroll about 2,000 students when it opens in September, 1993.

This will be the district’s fourth high school and the first built since Capistrano Valley High School in 1977.

Final attendance boundaries for the new high school have not been determined, but district officials said the school will enable them to reduce the number of students at the other high schools and allow for future growth.

The school will encompass 199,857 square feet, including 80 classrooms, a gymnasium, food services, a library, performing arts facilities and 10,833 square feet of administration space.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the school site, 27652 Laguna Hills Drive, Aliso Viejo.
