Courier’s Ranking Still No. 1 Going Into Indian Wells
What has Jim Courier done since he took over the No. 1 ranking?
Well, he hasn’t won a tournament--losing to Michael Chang in the final at San Francisco, to Boris Becker in a five-set final at Brussels and to Goran Ivanisevic in the quarterfinals at Stuttgart.
It hasn’t affected Courier’s No. 1 ranking as he enters the $1-million Newsweek Champions Cup at Hyatt Grand Champions, where he is seeded first.
The defending French Open and Australian Open champion has a first-round bye and will play either Frederick Fontang or Christo van Rensburg in the second round.
Pete Sampras is seeded second in the event, Michael Stich is third, with Guy Forget fourth and Ivanisevic fifth. Seven of the top 10 ranked players are entered.
Notable absentees are Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl.
The first eight seeded players in the field of 64 receive first-round byes.
