ROSEMEAD : Deputy’s Alleged Attacker Is in Critical Condition
A man who reportedly attacked a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in Rosemead was in critical condition Monday after being shot by a second deputy.
Manuel Mercado, 22, of Rosemead was being treated at Garfield Medical Center in Monterey Park for three wounds in the upper body. He will be booked for battery on a peace officer, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Investigators said the shooting occurred at 5 p.m. Sunday after Deputy Tim Foreman, 33, responded to a residential area in the 3100 block of Earle Avenue, where several men were reported to be loitering. Mercado allegedly ran up to the patrol car and began punching Foreman. The assailant then opened the door, sat in the patrol car and continued his attack while Foreman radioed for help, the spokesman said.
Mercado was shot by Deputy Mark McKague, 39, who responded to the call. Foreman was treated for facial cuts and black eyes at a hospital and released.
