A Los Angeles sales office of AT&T; is donating money and employee volunteers to the Garvey School District to help boost student academic achievement and physical fitness.

AT&T; has donated $2,000 for equipment for the district’s physical education program. Twenty employees of the company’s Majors Branch for Business Network Sales will be mentors, classroom aides, guest readers and counselors for students at high risk of becoming dropouts.

The district serves 7,500 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Its 13 schools are in Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel.

An AT&T; spokesman said Garvey was selected because its student body represents several Latin American and Asian countries. Six major languages and 20 dialects are spoken by students in the district.
