La Canada Flintridge : Council Won’t Extend Demolition Moratorium

Share

The City Council on Monday declined to add a one-year extension to an urgency ordinance designed to protect houses 80 years old or more from demolition.

A motion to extend the ordinance died for lack of a second.

“The feeling on the council is that there’s not much support for the ordinance and not much impact on the city,” said Mayor John W. Hastings. “The urgency is just not there.”

The urgency ordinance was adopted in January, 1991, to allow the La Canada Flintridge Historical Society to draft permanent protections for historic structures. City Manager Gabrielle Pryor said the society is expected to present its proposal in about two months.

In the meantime, there are no pending projects that would threaten historic structures, said Craig Ewing, director of community development.
