Higher Taxes for the Rich

Share

How refreshing to hear common sense from a congressman. I am referring to Beilenson’s column. To quote: “We would be wise to drop the idea of cutting taxes altogether and concentrate instead on investing in human and physical resources and on reducing our annual budget deficit--even though that would require raising the taxes paid by the wealthiest Americans.” Beilenson says, “We should pay for this new and necessary spending by raising the taxes of the richest Americans--those families earning in excess of $200,000 a year, whose incomes soared during the 1980s while their federal tax burden declined by about one-third.”

The fact is that since the emasculation of the progressive income tax system by former President Reagan and a compliant Congress, the federal government has lost an average of $88 billion a year in revenues. We in the senior movement call for restoring the income tax rate on the wealthy to their 1980 levels. It’s time for the wealthy to contribute their fair share.
