TOP TEACHER: Richard McCoun teaches social studies at Canyon High School, but he’s about to get a year off with pay. McCoun has won one of 38 hotly contested teacher-scholar awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, good for $30,000. He’ll study philosophy and “competing theories of justice” during his sabbatical, perhaps overseas. . . . He says he’ll miss the classroom “because you draw a lot from the students and their ideas.”
