Defenseman Dave Ellett scored two goals 66 seconds apart in his 600th NHL game as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Oilers, 5-2, Wednesday night at Edmonton, Canada.

Glenn Anderson, playing his first game in Edmonton since the Oilers traded him to the Maple Leafs last fall, added a breakaway goal early in the third period. Grant Fuhr, the other former Oiler standout sent to Toronto in the deal that brought Vince Damphousse and Luke Richardson to Edmonton, stopped 24 shots.

Both former Oilers drew cheers from the 15,673 fans, who still harbored fond memories of the two players’ contributions toward five Stanley Cups.

Ellett beat Bill Ranford with two long screened shots late in the second period to rally Toronto from a 2-1 deficit for its third consecutive victory.

He scored his ninth power-play goal of the season on Wendel Clark’s setup to tie the score at 14:15, then beat Ranford again with a blooped wrist shot at 15:21 to give Toronto a 3-2 lead.

It was the Maple Leafs’ first road victory since Feb. 7 and only their seventh of the season.

New Jersey 5, New York Rangers 4--The New Jersey Devils ended more than three years of frustration at New York’s Madison Square Garden and avenged a 7-1 home loss to the Rangers two days earlier as Russian rookie Alexander Semak scored two second-period goals.

The Devils won at the Garden for the first time since Jan. 9, 1989, going 0-7-3 since that time.

New Jersey took command in the second period as Semak, playing his 13th NHL game, showed the skills that made him a star with the Soviet National Team.

Semak broke a 1-1 tie on New Jersey’s first shot of the second period, making a spectacular deke to walk in alone from the right circle before backhanding the puck past Richter at 5:46.

He got his second of the night and fifth of the season from inside the right circle.
