Joyner-Kersee, Devers Entered at Aztec Meet

Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee and San Diego’s Gail Devers will be the featured attractions in the 14th Aztec Track and Field Classic on Saturday at UC San Diego.

The event will be at UCSD’s track because of infield construction at San Diego State’s Choc Sportsman Oval.

Joyner-Kersee, along with being the world record-holder in the heptathlon, is one of the top long jumpers in the world. Devers, who attended Sweetwater High, holds the U.S. record in the 100 meter hurdles at 12.42. Other world class women athletes appearing are 400-meter hurdlers Janeene Vickers and Schowanda Williams and San Diego State sprinter Darla Vaughn.

In the men’s field, Kevin Young, the 1988 NCAA 400-meter hurdle champ, will face Eugene Swift in the 110-high hurdles. Swift had the sixth fastest sprint-hurdle time for an American last year.

Field events begin at 9 a.m., running events start 30 minutes later with the invitational 3,000.

BASEBALL

San Diego State blew an eight-point halftime lead and fell to host Brigham Young, 66-65, in a Western Athletic Conference game. Kieishsha Garnes, the Aztecs’ leading scorer, was held to six points in 21 minutes. Michelle Suman led SDSU (17-9, 9-4) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

BASEBALL

Freshman catcher Brock Marsh’s grand slam broke open a tie game in the sixth inning to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 10-6 victory over visiting Southwest State (Minn.) in game one. Rich Miller’ three-run shot in the first inning put the Crusaders ahead 4-0. The Crusaders (7-5-1) took the second game, 9-1, behind Galen Ishii’s five innings of shutout pitching.

Junior Ryan Flanagan allowed two hits over six innings in UCSD’s 9-3 victory over visiting Southern California College. Flanagan also struck out four in improving his record to 4-0. Ernie Isola went three for four to raise his average to .409 for the Tritons (9-0-1).

WRESTLING

San Diego State’s Quincy Clark (177), Phil Meyer (190) and Phil Jones (heavyweight) will try to qualify for the NCAA’s at the Western Athletic Conference championships today. Clark, a sophomore, has a 22-8-2 record, the best on the team. Meyer has won four of his last five matches and is 8-7-1 and Jones is 17-9.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Julie McKeon led the University of San Diego to a 6-3 upset victory over San Diego State with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nicole Storto at No. 1 singles. It was SDSU’s first loss of the season.

SDSU’s Susan Hawke and Storto, the nation’s No. 4-ranked doubles team, defeated McKeon and Laura Richards, 6-0, 6-3.

USD improved to 5-2; SDSU fell to 5-1.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers named Stuart “Chip” Morton as their assistant strength and conditioning coach. Morton, 29, spent the last five seasons as the assistant strength coach at Penn State.
