COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Anteaters Upset California in Men’s Tennis

Fred Bach and Aaron Stolpman won in singles and doubles as No. 21 UC Irvine beat No. 14 California, 5-4, in a nonconference men’s tennis match Thursday at Irvine.

After winning his singles match, 6-4, 7-5, Bach teamed with fellow freshman Chris Tontz, for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles. Stolpman, a 6-2, 7-5 singles winner, joined Brett Hansen-Dent for a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Matt Lucena and Tom Phanco at No. 1 doubles. Neel Grover won at No. 5 singles for the Anteaters.

Lucena topped Hansen-Dent, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal State Long Beach 69, Cal State Fullerton 64--The Titans were up, 57-32, with 16 minutes 55 seconds left, before being outscored, 37-7, at Long Beach.

Marissa Frial gave the Titans their final lead of the game, 64-62, hitting two free throws with 2:03 left. Marsheela Harriston tied the score with 1:50 to play and Danielle Scott gave the 49ers the lead for good 47 seconds later with a basket and free throw. Scott added two insurance free throws with 49 seconds left.

Fullerton’s Joey Ray led all scorers with 22 points, including a school record-tying six three-point baskets. Claudette Jackson added 19 and Kisa Hughes had 16 before fouling out.

Senior center Bolivia Gaytan had a career-high 21 for Long Beach (18-8, 12-5) and Scott had 17.

UC Santa Barbara 82, UC Irvine 52--Yvonne Catala had 14 and Jinelle Williams 13 in a losing effort for the visiting Anteaters (5-22, 1-17).
