Four operas, the same number as this year, will be presented by Opera Pacific next season at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

The company’s seventh season will begin Sept. 12 with Puccini’s “La Boheme” (through Sept. 20), followed by Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” (Jan. 9-17), Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” (Feb. 19 to March 7) and Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” (Feb. 24 to March 6).

The “Boheme” production, originally created for the Washington (D.C.) Opera in 1981, was seen at the Performing Arts Center as part of Opera Pacific’s 1987 season. Stella Zambalis and Ai-Lan Zhu will alternate as Mimi; Cesar Hernandez and Jianyi Zhang will alternate as Rodolfo. Jan Grissom will sing Musetta at all performances. The casting of Marcello will be announced later. Steve Mercurio will conduct, and Roman Terleckyj will be the stage director.

The production for “Romeo” was created for the Montreal Opera by Claude Girard in 1986. David DiChiera, Opera Pacific’s general director, said he is still considering which productions of the other two operas to bring.

In “Trovatore,” Carol Vaness and Deborah Voigt will alternate as Leonora; Giorgio Tieppo and Fabio Armiliato will alternate as Manrico. Mark Rucker and a baritone to be announced will alternate as Count di Luna. Florence Quivar and Eugenie Grunewald will alternate as Azucena. Richard Buckley will conduct. The stage director has yet to be named.

In “Romeo,” Maureen O’Flynn and Marcello Giordani will sing the title roles. Bernard Uzan will be the stage director. The conductor will be announced later.

In “Figaro,” Benita Valente will sing the Countess, Louis Otey will sing Count Almaviva, Helen Donath will sing Susanna and Faith Esham will sing Cherubino. Figaro and the stage director have yet to be announced. Klaus Donath will conduct.

DiChiera said the budget for next season will be $5 million, about the same as this season’s.

“We’re going to try to hold costs down,” he said. “We’re going to be very sharp with our pencil. These are really tough times.” However, he said, ticket prices for next season will not increase.

Because this season ends Sunday, final attendance figures have not been compiled, but DiChiera did say that single ticket sales have declined significantly, although subscriptions have remained steady at about 9,000.

Season tickets will go on sale April 1. Single tickets will be available in mid-August for “Boheme” and on Dec. 1 for the other three productions.
