No Friend of Fauna, Fundamentalist Dannemeyer Should Remember Noah

Kudos to Dean Ohlman for his letter “A Confusing of Greed With Need” (March 1), in which he takes Rep. William E. Dannemeyer to task for defending developers in their endless onslaught against the land. A week or so ago, I received a letter from Dannemeyer mailed to his constituents (can’t imagine how my name got on that list) in which he mounted a similar attack on those who would protect and nurture the defenseless in nature.

Mailed at public expense, this tract provides ample proof of Dannemeyer’s graduation, cum laude, from the James Watt College of the Environment. Here all environmental questions can be simply answered by estimating the cost, in hard dollars, of allowing a certain critter to live, then deciding to eradicate it or preserve it. Talk about valuing life!

Seemingly lost in the debate are Dannemeyer’s fundamentalist Christian beliefs, which he is never at a loss to disclose when it comes to the matter of eradicating gays and abortion clinics, but which appear to be highly selective when it comes to nature, wildlife and developers’ money.

For what about Noah, who preserved all animal species? Does the Bible note any value placed on a given species? Did only those with the biggest eyes or the prettiest coats or the most exotic skins find a berth? Indeed, as pointed out by Mr. Ohlman, a little brushing up on the Good Book would seem to be in order.

One really does wonder at the quality of life if this society were led by men who hold a Bible in one hand and a developer’s money in the other.
