WESTMINSTER : Man Suffers Burns in Home Grease Fire

Share

A 69-year-old man suffered second- and third-degree burns in a grease fire at his residence Sunday morning, firefighters reported. The blaze, which was quickly extinguished, caused an estimated $1,000 damage to the family’s home at 9002 Jennrich Ave.

The victim, Dinh Nguyen, was treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange for burns on his hand and foot, said Capt. Craig Campbell of the Westminster Fire Department.

Campbell said Nguyen and his wife were cooking fried foods shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday in the kitchen of their home. Campbell said the husband and wife went into another room and did not notice that the frying pan contents had ignited.

After a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the house and alerted the Nguyen family, Dinh Nguyen attempted to pick up the burning pan and spilled grease on himself, Campbell said.

“The smoke would have been detected earlier had the family had a battery for their smoke detector,” Campbell said. “Also, the family did not have a fire extinguisher, which is something we recommend that all households have, especially in the kitchen area.”

Campbell said firefighters extinguished the kitchen blaze about 7 a.m., and the fire did not spread beyond the kitchen.
