A Cypress College student was killed Monday morning when she was run over by a delivery truck that was backing up, police said.

A milk truck was near a college building at 7:55 a.m. when it struck Joyce Pellen, 40, of Anaheim, knocking her to the ground and then running over her, Lt. Phillip Satterfield said.

Pellen was taken to Humana Hospital-West Anaheim, where she was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. of apparent head and internal injuries, Satterfield said.

Pellen was a part-time Cypress College student since 1983 and was majoring in psychiatric technology, a preparation for later work in the mental health field, college officials said.

It was not clear why Pellen did not see or hear the approaching truck, which was driving on the east side of the college’s humanities building while making a routine delivery, Diane Baker, a college spokeswoman, said.

As the truck backed up, it emitted a beeping sound to alert passersby, Baker said.

The driver of the truck was not cited pending the outcome of an investigation.
