FTC Cites Wireless Cable Application Pitch: The Federal Trade Commission is alleging that a Las Vegas business used false claims to sell application and filing services to investors wanting to operate wireless cable television systems. The FTC said 1,000 to 3,000 investors may have paid $6,450 to $6,950 each to American Microtel Inc. The company prepares applications for Federal Communications Commission lotteries that award licenses. The FTC alleges that the company falsely represented that the systems are worth millions of dollars and can compete successfully with traditional cable TV franchises for subscribers. Wireless cable systems use microwave technology to transmit video programming to rooftop antennas of subscribers.
