The 1991 reserve police officer of the year was named recently at a dinner held by the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club in Sunland. Robert A. Arabian, a Cal State Northridge student, was selected by the Foothill Division of the Los Angeles Police Department from four volunteer officers honored at the dinner. Arabian, who plans to attend law school this fall, worked patrol, vice, foot patrol and other beats with police officers. Division Capt. Tim McBride also recognized Bobbie Jo Dean, a marketing representative for 20th Century Insurance Co.; John J. Colello, a college student, and Jay Louvier, a minister, for their work as reserve officers.

About 12,000 members of the San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council will participate in an 18-month beautification project at Pierce College and the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Recreation Center beginning this week. The two sites were chosen by the Scouts for the nationwide “Girl Scouts Care for the Earth” service project, Scout spokeswoman Kimberly Martinez said. The Scouts, who range in age from 5 to 17, will pick up trash, remove graffiti, paint fences and maintain the Braille hiking trail at the college. At the recreation center, Scouts will maintain the rose garden at the senior citizens center, pick up trash and remove graffiti. The council’s area stretches from Tujunga to Calabasas. The project coincides with the 80th birthday of Girl Scouts, established in the United States on March 12, 1912.

More than 100 American Red Cross volunteers from the San Fernando Valley district in Van Nuys have begun their monthlong fund-raising effort for the group’s programs. The group also helped 2,265 residents during disasters or emergencies, and assisted 736 military personnel and veterans.
