POMONA : 2 Convicted of Slaying West Covina Activist
Two men were found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the 1990 shooting death of Raymond Shield, a West Covina community activist and arts patron.
A Pomona Superior Court jury reached the verdicts against Lucien Martin, 20, of Gardena and Paul Watkins, 23, of Moreno Valley after deliberating for a day and half.
The two could face the death penalty if the jury recommends that sentence. The penalty phase of the trial begins Monday.
Shield, 61, was shot at 5 a.m. July 17, 1990, outside the West Covina Holiday Inn as he was seeing his wife, daughter and two grandchildren off to catch the hotel airport shuttle bus for a Hawaii vacation.
