A Ramona man who shot a sheriff’s deputy on New Year’s Eve was sentenced Wednesday to 11 years in state prison.

Defense attorney Bill Youmans told San Diego Municipal Court Judge Gale Kaneshiro that Domingo Gutierrez-Martinez, 25, was drunk and celebrating the New Year when he shot deputy Michael Vaszorich, whose life was saved by his bullet-proof vest.

Gutierrez-Martinez pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder.

The 46-year-old deputy suffered bruised and scraped ribs from the bullet’s impact.
