California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Wilson to Fill Spots on Efficiency Panel

Gov. Pete Wilson said he intends to appoint “dozens and possibly hundreds” of volunteers to a Commission on Efficiency and Quality in State Government by the end of this month. The panel would be modeled after the 250-member federal Grace Commission that former President Ronald Reagan created nearly a decade ago to help reduce bureaucratic “fraud and waste.” The governor said the commission would conduct a “massive department-by-department audit of state government.” Wilson first announced the creation of the commission in September. He said Wednesday that the delay in naming members has been due to difficulty in finding qualified people who have the time to serve.
