House Panel OKs $25 Billion More for S&L; Bailout: The House Banking Committee voted 37 to 17 to pump another $25 billion into the savings and loan bailout--enough to keep it going through next fall’s election. But the amount is still $30 billion short of what the Administration requested to complete the cleanup, now expected to cost $160 billion. That is more than triple what President Bush said the bailout would cost when he took office. The bill would keep the Resolution Trust Corp. in business beyond April 1, when its spending authority would otherwise expire.
