Ten candidates will compete in the June 3 primary for the 40th Assembly District seat that is being vacated by veteran legislator Tom Bane, according to candidacy papers filed Wednesday.
In addition to first-term Assemblywoman Barbara Friedman (D-Los Angeles), who declared her candidacy immediately after Bane announced March 6 that he will not run, the field will consist mostly of San Fernando Valley business people and political novices.
Friedman has been searching for a new political home since her current Griffith Park-area district was carved up in the redrawing of districts.
Friedman’s opponents in the Democratic primary will be Jim Aldrich, a Reseda research analyst; Dan Coen, a community relations director from North Hollywood, and Joel Kelman, a North Hollywood attorney.
Running in the Republican primary will be Horace H. Heidt Jr., a Sherman Oaks businessman; Jon R. Lorenzen, a Reseda businessman, and Brian Perry, a Canoga Park businessman.
Glenn Bailey, a community issues specialist from Reseda, will run for the seat under the Green Party banner, while Van Nuys businessman John Vernon will compete as a Libertarian.
The Peace and Freedom candidate for the seat will be Jean K. Glasser, a teacher from Van Nuys.
Bane, chairman of the powerful Assembly Rules Committee and a fixture in San Fernando Valley politics for more than 30 years, said last week he just did not want to run anymore. He added that he was considering joining his wife, Marlene, in a campaign consulting business.
The strongly Democratic district covers Van Nuys and parts of North Hollywood, Reseda and Encino.
