* * * 1/2 Jazz Epistles, “Jazz Epistles,” Celluloid import. Check the African and world music sections for these late-’50s recordings by South Africa’s first modern jazz ensemble, featuring Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly Dollar Brand). These epistles-- written mostly by altoist Kippie Moetski or Ibrahim--come straight from the Blue Note hard-bop bible and sport well-conceived and executed head/solo arrangements by a sextet with a sax/trumpet/trombone front line.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
