JAZZED: A new recording by a Cal State Fullerton jazz ensemble, “Yardbird Suite for Charlie,” has caught the ear of jazz buff and Assemblyman Willard H. Murray Jr. (D-Paramount). He likes it so much that he wants the university to be the home of his proposed Institute for the Preservation of Jazz. Unfortunately, his legislation proposing the institute contains no extra money for the campus jazz program, whose director is now part-time because of budget cuts. Alas, said music department Chairman Benton Minor, “If it’s just a title and an honor, so be it.”
