COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CLU Batters Puget Sound Twice to Raise Mark to 19-0

Cal Lutheran’s baseball team maintained its furious pace with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Puget Sound on Saturday.

The Kingsmen improved to 19-0, winning, 8-2 and 10-0.

Rawley Jacobsen hit for the cycle and Jay Lucas hit two home runs to lead Cal Lutheran in the second game. Mike Winslow (5-0) and Jeff Berman limited Puget Sound to six hits. Cal Lutheran left 12 runners on base, twice leaving the bases loaded.

In the first game, the Kingsmen rolled behind the three-hit pitching of Steve Dempsey (6-0) and Tim Wimbish. Dempsey gave up only two hits and struck out five in eight innings. Darrell McMillin hit his 12th home run and Dan Smith hit his third homer for Cal Lutheran.

Five Cal Lutheran pitchers limited Puget Sound (3-7) to nine hits in 18 innings.

Cal Lutheran trailed only in the second game, falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the first. But the Kingsmen tied the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the inning and went ahead for good with two runs in the third.

Cal Lutheran has outscored its opponents, 209-32.

It was Cal Lutheran’s third victory in two days. On Friday, the Kingsmen, ranked third in NCAA Division III, posted a 6-3 win over Biola.

The Kingsmen will be off until March 25 when they will compete in the Sunshine Classic at UC San Diego. Their next home game will be April 4 against Pomona-Pitzer.

In other baseball games:

Pierce 10, Bakersfield 6--Three Brahmas each collected three hits and Eric Raba scattered five hits over six innings to help Pierce remain atop the Western State Conference standings.

Pierce (15-1-1, 7-0 in conference play) is a half-game ahead of Ventura, which beat Moorpark, 5-3, to run its conference record to 6-0.

Robby Welles had four runs batted in and three hits--including his eighth home run.

Brian Smith added three hits and an RBI and scored four runs for Pierce. Paul Geller also had three hits.

Canyons 6, Santa Barbara 3--Sean Henson pitched a four-hitter, giving up one earned run and recording 15 groundouts to guide Canyons to a WSC road win.

Jeff Hairell was three for five with a double and an RBI for the Cougars (7-11, 4-3).

Santa Barbara fell to 6-9, 2-5 in WSC play.

Oxnard 11, Valley 5--Mark Contreras went three for five--including a double and a triple--and knocked in three runs to spark Oxnard (1-12, 1-5) to its first win.

Nick Frank, Adrian Estrada and Al Anaya each added two hits for Oxnard in the WSC contest at Valley. Chris Lange (1-0) earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up four runs--three earned--four hits and three walks.

SOFTBALL

Grossmont 1-0, Moorpark 0-5--Kathi Morales struck out six and gave up only three hits for host Moorpark (10-5) in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader. Morales, a sophomore from St. Bonaventure High, also hit a run-scoring triple.

Moorpark’s Stevie Campbell was two for three in the first game. Heather Santiago (8-3) took the loss despite giving up only four hits.

Redlands 6-6, Cal Lutheran 0-13--Brenda Frafjord had four hits and Cheryl Aschenbach was three for three with three RBIs to help Cal Lutheran (11-4, 9-2) gain a split of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Redlands.

In the second game, Michelle Campos was three for five and Frafjord drove in two runs for Cal Lutheran.

Elite tournament--Cal State Northridge won two of three games, defeating Hawaii, 2-0, and New Mexico State, 1-0, and losing to Cal State Sacramento, 3-0.

The Matadors (19-6) are 4-2 in the tournament.

In Northridge’s final game of the day, senior Cami Allen (4-6) scattered six hits and struck out five against New Mexico State. Denise Swank scored the only run in the third. Swank singled, went to third on an infield out and scored on an errant throw to the plate after Nicole Williams’ grounder. The Matadors mustered only two hits.

Northridge beat Hawaii behind freshman Kathy Blake’s two-hitter. She was backed by home runs by Tamara Ivie, her second, and Jen Fleming, her second.

The Matadors had only two hits against Sacramento junior left-hander Amy Day, a transfer from Southwest Missouri State.

Northridge will play either DePaul or Sacramento in today’s semifinals.
