ANAHEIM : Developer Fees for Schools Sought

Share

Education officials will ask the City Council on Tuesday to require housing developers pay an extra fee to help build new schools.

Supt. Meliton Lopez of the Anaheim City School District said his district’s campuses cannot take many more students and that the city should not issue building permits to those developers unwilling to help build new ones. The district already receives about $1.50 a square foot from residential developers for school construction, but officials say that is not enough.

“Our district is growing by 750 students a year, and we don’t have any space for them,” Lopez said.

School officials will be testifying during a public hearing on an amendment to the city’s General Plan, which outlines all facets of the city’s growth and operation. The officials want their proposal added to the 150-page amendment, which outlines future plans for such city departments as police, fire and library.

The Police Department in the next several years says in the amendment that it wants to build a substation near Anaheim Stadium and improve emergency response time to less than three minutes. Current emergency response time is about five minutes.

The Fire Department says it too plans to build a new station near the stadium.

The Library Department says it wants to build another branch in the Anaheim Hills in the near future.

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m.
