CORONA DEL MAR : Section of Beach Is Adopted for Cleanup
A service group in Newport Beach has pledged to adopt part of the Corona del Mar beachfront and plans to begin collecting trash and debris to keep the beach clean.
The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor is the second group in Newport Beach to request responsibility for beach upkeep. The burst of civic activity has prompted the city to study new policies for such involvement.
The Marina Park Homeowners Assn. started the cleanup effort earlier this year, and the mobile-home residents along Newport Bay are happy that others are following their lead.
“I suspected it might tickle someone’s funny bone,” said resident Herb Williams, who led the Marina Park effort in January. “I think it’s marvelous.”
Representatives of the Exchange Club were not available for comment, but the group won City Council approval to adopt parts of Little Corona, including Pirate’s Cove.
The group has pledged to pick up trash and debris from the beach on a quarterly basis, or more often if needed.
