UC Irvine dance faculty member and five-time Tony nominee Donald McKayle has received the prestigious $25,000 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award, ADF officials have announced. McKayle has choreographed works for Broadway as well as such modern dance classics as “Games,” “Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder” and “District Storyville.” Previous Scripps ADF Award winners include Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor and Alvin Alley.

“Soultaker,” by Michael Rissi of Placentia, was named “Best Video Release” during the 18th annual Saturn Awards honoring science fiction, fantasy and horror flicks. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” won five trophies including best director (James Cameron), best actress (Linda Hamilton) and best performance by a juvenile (Edward Furlong). “Terminator’s” robotic star Arnold Schwarzenegger lost out to Anthony Hopkins of “The Silence of the Lambs” as best actor, but was given a lifetime achievement award by the event’s presenter, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. “Lambs” got four awards in all.

The Third Annual Irish Faire in Laguna Beach attracted between 8,000 and 10,000 people and raised about $16,000 for Straight Ahead Inc., a nonprofit drug recovery center for young adults in Dana Point, according to event chair Leonore Coyne.
