The protests arise from widespread anger in the gay, lesbian and HIV-affected communities over the invisibility of AIDS in Hollywood films, and decades of stereotype-reinforcing portrayals of lesbians and gay men.

The planned demonstrations have already generated media coverage of real concerns that disproportionately negative screen images fuel increasing anti-gay discrimination and violence. Nonetheless, the possibility that demonstrators might disrupt a popular American institution threatens to alienate potential Hollywood allies in the effort to move beyond invisibility and negative stereotypes.

I hope Academy members approach the protests and their message with open minds and hearts, and that demonstrators choose tactics that effectively communicate their concerns rather than simply vent anger and frustration.
