BURBANK : Big Boy Owner to Fight Bid for Landmark Status

Share

The owner of a Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank that preservationists want enshrined as a state historical landmark is finding the proposed honor hard to swallow.

Philip MacDonald said he plans to oppose efforts by a conservancy group to nominate the 43-year-old building as an official “California Point of Historical Interest.”

The Los Angeles County Historical Landmarks and Records Commission voted March 9 to recommend the building for historic status, a proposal that would be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors and state Office of Historic Preservation.

Prompted by MacDonald’s protests, the commission will reconsider the recommendation next month, officials said. MacDonald said his family has long planned to put an office building on the site.

“It’s preserving banality,” MacDonald said of the preservation proposal. “That building is dull and trite and needs to be scrapped.”
