LA PALMA : City Grants Duke Leave of Absence

Share

The City Council has granted Councilman Orbrey Duke a leave of absence to allow him time to recover from strokes he suffered earlier this year after heart surgery.

Duke, 61, last attended the Feb. 4 council meeting and left early because of fatigue. The former police chief suffered a heart attack in October and has been in and out of the hospital after suffering from more than one stroke. Under state law, absence from office for 60 days without leave requires the city to appoint a replacement.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday to grant Duke leave for an unspecified amount of time, although City Manager Pamela Gibson recommended that the council re-evaluate the terms of the leave no later than June 1. Duke, elected in November, 1990, has two years remaining on his term.
