Puppet Theater’s Shaky Future
What a sad loss for Los Angeles if the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre has to close (“Marionette Theater’s Future Uncertain,” Feb. 29). After 30 years of beautiful productions, it would seem likely that subsidies would be forthcoming from the city or community foundations.
I will never forget the several times this puppet theater came down, as volunteers, to Pacific State Hospital for the Retarded, now known as the Lanterman School, and gave hours of inspired performances to hundreds of patients of all ages. (A few started to talk for the first time during some of these activities.)
It is a pity that we must rely on private funds for such an important asset; a counterpoint to the rougher aspects of life on L.A. streets.

A recent benefit raised about $7,000. Other fund-raisers may be held in April.
