Literacy Group Certifies New Tutors

New tutors who have graduated from training courses offered by the Central Orange County Literacy Council include Jeanne T. Finn, La Palma; Karen L. Housman, Stanton; Suzanne Childers, Long Beach; Bee A. Frame, Midway City; Jack R. DeBruyn, Mission Viejo; Sandra F. Clardy and Mary Sid Purdy, Westminster, and Joey S. Zance and Dennis B. Erdmann, Orange.

Also graduating are are Renne P. Gardner and Sandra L. Lako, Santa Ana; Nancy W. Gellett, Joan A. Lia, Bridget K. Maley, Patricia A. McArdle, Barbara Welton and Dexter Welton, Fountain Valley.

Others are Sonia K. Haber, Herbert H. Haber, Eunice Morton, Nancy E. Meyers, Anaheim; Laura C. Florelle, Terry Hodges, Nair S. Lawrence, Richard Binnix and Chala M. Parsons, Garden Grove.

Each will teach English-as-a-second-language classes in their community.

Laguna Beach resident Cheryl Mouleart, a family nurse practitioner at FHP Fountain Valley Medical Center, has been named “Mid-Level Practitioner of the Year” for FHP’s region covering Orange County and Long Beach.

She is a Texas Woman’s University graduate and received her nurse practitioner certificate and master’s degree at UCLA.

Mouleart, who works in the obstetrics and gynecology department, is a member of the California Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau, an international society for nurses.

Alison Wellmerling, a fifth-grader at Helen Estock Elementary School in Tustin, has won the California State Baton Twirling Championship in her grade level. She is a member of the Tustin Twirlettes.

MyDuyen (Millie) Thi Nguyen of Cypress High School has won first place in the American Enterprise Speech Contest, sponsored by the Newport Chapter of the National Management Assn.

The win moves her a step closer to a national scholarship competition offering $9,000 in prizes. She will present her talk at the Southern California Area Council Contest in April.

The speeches deal with the role a free economy plays in American society.

The 16-member varsity cheerleader squad from Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita won first place at the recent 13th Annual California State Cheerleading Championships at Magic Mountain.

The squad includes Dana Woods, Amy Renziehausen, Tanya Ingardia, Niki De Fries, Sarah Morris and Keri Winters, all seniors; Jami Orlowski, Katie Fracisco, Gwenne Eberle, Lynn Boivin, Shanay Dickerson and Courtney Hamel, all juniors, and Rhonda Mateas, Erin Avalos, Amber Lee and Jessica Osika, sophomores.

The squad is coached by Jodi Sweet. Adviser is Paul Marks.

Laguna Niguel resident Christopher Dionne, 17, a junior at Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, will receive his Boy Scout Eagle Rank at a court of honor April 5 at Crown Valley Community Center in Mission Viejo.

He built a large flight cage for the Orange County Bird of Prey Rehabilitation Center in El Toro as his community project.

He is a volleyball player and a member of the rock climbing club at his high school.

Social work consultant Anna Kaufman of Huntington Beach has been selected to receive the Koshland Practitioner Award that recognizes social work and social welfare leaders who significantly advance the profession.

Kaufman, who has written many social work papers and created a training course for social workers, will receive the award and a $2,000 prize on April 2 in Costa Mesa, at the state convention of the California Chapter of National Assn. of Social Workers.
