Colt Wins by 27 Lengths at Santa Anita in First Start
The colt Case Study, a 3-year-old first-time starter trained by Ron Ellis, won the 6 1/2-furlong fourth race at Santa Anita on Friday by 27 lengths, believed to be a record margin at the track.
Case Study led the field of nine California-bred maiden claimers from the gate on a track listed as sloppy, but Cueposition, who finished fourth, stayed within a length for a half-mile before giving up. Case Study, the 5-2 second betting choice, paid $7.00
Jockey David Flores, who has ridden in 343 races this meeting, could not remember ever winning by such a margin.
