Easter isn’t just bunny rabbits, decorated eggs and Sunday church services.

This will become clear if you visit the Folk Tree in Pasadena this season and stroll through “Saints & Sinners,” the store’s annual Easter exhibit of ceremonial and religious art objects from a variety of Christian and non-Christian cultures.

The fifth annual exhibit highlights both old and new Latin American--mainly Mexican--

religious folk art, combined with Easter-inspired works created especially for the show by Los Angeles-area artists.

Some of the works include large processional pieces from Oaxaca depicting religious symbols or figures, and festooned with tiny, multicolored flowers; a variety of retablos (late 19th- and 20th-Century religious paintings on tin or wood); and santos milagros (devotional offerings to wooden carvings of saints).

Home shrines also are represented. These small, wooden boxes combine paper, plastic or wax flowers with colored foil and wooden carvings of Christ in which anonymous artists make personal and expressive statements about their religious beliefs.
