Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic, 2-1, before 80,000 at Santo Domingo in the first of 582 matches that will whittle 138 nations down to 22 for the 1994 World Cup.
The Dominicans said they would protest to FIFA, soccer’s governing body, claiming 10 of Puerto Rico’s players were not Puerto Rican nationals and were not eligible to play on the team.
