Net for River Is Workable
County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn stated in today’s paper regarding the installation of rescue nets along the Los Angeles River that “designing such nets will be complicated because they must allow for free passage of water and small objects, but provide a safe interception for humans and animals.”
The solution is simple and I am sure that it has already been suggested: have a net secured to strategically located bridges that can be lowered in case of emergency.
A net in a lowered position at all times would surely deteriorate or get torn quickly. The general public is knowledgeable enough to read the directions on a fire extinguisher and therefore would understand directions to lower a net.
