BUENA PARK : City Denounces Plan to Shift Tax Revenue
The City Council recently adopted a resolution denouncing Gov. Pete Wilson’s plans to shift tax monies in an effort to balance the budget.
According to city officials, the proposal would take $347 million of local property tax revenues from certain accounts such as sanitation districts and funnel them into other areas, leaving the taxpayers to pick up the tab in districts that lost funds.
“This is another case when the state has refused to come to grips with its problems,” complained Councilman Donald L. Bone. “I am upset about it. I think it is wrong.”
If approved, the measure would take away more than $35 million received by the Sanitation District and used to fund a portion of the costs of the collection, treatment and disposal of sewage. City officials say the plan would increase the user fee paid by a typical homeowner an average of 70% and in some cases as much as 129%.
City council members urged residents to write to the governor. “Tell them to quit dumping on cities,” Mayor Don R. Griffin said.
