Tandon Reports Loss of $19.7 Million for Quarter

Tandon Corp., a Moorpark-based maker of personal computers, reported a fourth-quarter loss of $19.7 million compared with a year-earlier profit of $9 million.

The company, which derives 82% of its business from Europe, blamed the loss on restructuring costs, “intense price-cutting” and stepped-up competition. The loss in the quarter that ended Dec. 31 came on a 6% decline in Tandon’s sales, to $125.7 million from $133.9 million.

Tandon said it would continue streamlining its operations to better compete, and plans to market a new family of “low-cost” personal computers in Europe during the present quarter.

For all of 1991, Tandon lost $48 million, compared with a profit of $25.4 million the previous year, and its annual sales rose 5%, to $461.4 million from $439.9 million.
