GARDEN GROVE : Firefighters Earn Umberg’s Thanks

Share

Garden Grove firefighters have won praise from State Rep. Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove), who presented them with resolutions commending their performance.

“We wanted to demonstrate acknowledgment of their work,” Umberg said. “The state is bankrupt, and the cities feel the pinch and are asking firefighters to take cuts. Although times are tough, we appreciate what they’re doing.”

In recent remarks at two fire stations, Umberg cited the work of Garden Grove Fire Capt. Bill Dumas, who in August uncovered the dumping of 4 1/2 tons of potentially cancer-causing asbestos.

Dumas said he got a tip in June that the owner of a Garden Grove business was getting ready to dispose of “pure asbestos” stored in 90-pound bags.

He said he later discovered the bags in a driveway at the Port of Long Beach.

It was reportedly the largest illegal dumping of hazardous materials to be discovered in the United States.
