Six people were killed in a traffic accident that sent a family van tumbling into a canal, authorities said. The dead were identified as five members of a Calexico family who were in the van and an El Centro man who was driving a panel truck, said Dharam Samra, an Imperial County coroner’s investigator. The eastbound van and northbound truck collided shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday at California 98 and Ferrell Road, seven miles west of Calexico. The van rolled about 100 feet and ended up overturned in four feet of swift water in the Wisteria Canal. The family was in the retail business and was returning from Los Angeles with a load of products including household appliances and bicycles. The panel truck driver, Hui Tae Yom, 49, was pronounced dead at El Centro Regional Medical Center. The van’s occupants died at the scene. Family members identified the victims Monday. They were: Mario Alberto Del Bosque, 38; his wife, Maria, 36; sons Manuel Alberto, 15, and Mario Munoz Jr., 6, and Mercedes Chonquit, thought to be between 64 and 66 years of age.
