COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Rallies in Ninth to Beat Saddleback

The Cypress baseball team scored five runs in the ninth inning to defeat Saddleback, 10-9, in an Orange Empire Conference game Monday at Cypress.

The Chargers closed within three runs with an unearned run early in the inning and then scored their final four with two outs. Kevin Clark singled in the tying run, took second on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a single by Andy Gonzalez.

Another key hit in the rally was a two-run double by Ron Hernandez.

David Newhan had three hits, including his fourth home run of the season, for the Chargers (16-10, 5-7). The Chargers have won five of their past six conference games after losing their first six. Newhan has now homered in Cypress’ last three games. Ryan Relph had two hits, including a home run, and two runs batted in for Saddleback (10-8-2, 6-5-1), which dropped to third place in the conference standings behind Riverside.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Fullerton 1, Golden West 0--Angie Guerrero pitched a one-hitter and scored the game’s only run when Courtney Thompson’s single brought her home in the fourth inning. Guerrero (14-8) only allowed a third-inning single by Tambra Strickland. Fullerton is 16-9, 5-3. Golden West is 6-17, 1-7.
