HACKER’S HOLIDAY: Angels’ veep Whitey Herzog’s job in Palm Springs (C1) is to worry about team injuries and expectations. But not today. . . . Today he takes time off to play in the celebrity pro-am at the annual Dinah Shore Ladies Professional Golf Assn. tournament. Herzog was asked what kind of golfer he is. “Left-handed,” he responded. Herzog’s handicap: “Being left-handed.” His description of his game: “I’m a hacker.”

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
