Alhambra : School Rezoning Rejected

Share

The City Council unanimously turned down a request by Ramona Convent Secondary School to change the zoning of part of its property to allow the construction of single-family homes.

The Catholic order, which owns the all-girls school, sought to change 1.97 acres of its 19.26-acre property at the southeast corner of Marengo Avenue and Glendon Way from open space to low-density residential housing.

Charles Cummings, an attorney for the Ramona Convent of the Holy Names, said a denial by the council would deprive the school of “all economic benefit” of owning the land.

Principal Margaret Spiller said that the school’s educational mission is more valuable to the city than the open space and that the school needs the income it would acquire by selling part of its land.

But Councilwoman Barbara A. Messina said the open space is valuable to the community and if the property were sold, the school would be unable to expand in the future.
