EL CAJON : Recaptured Inmate Moved Downtown

An inmate who escaped the El Cajon jail only to be recaptured eight hours later was ordered Wednesday to be held without bail in the downtown County Jail.

Daryl Keith Woods, 29, of San Diego, appeared on crutches before San Diego Municipal Judge Jay Bloom as a result of breaking an ankle during the March 16 escape.

Woods allegedly smashed a hole through the Styrofoam-like wall of his cell on the seventh floor and lowered himself to a third-floor roof with bedsheets tied together. His attorney told Bloom that Woods would have surgery today on his foot, where a bone was shattered in his escape.

Woods pleaded not guilty to the escape charge, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 14.

He had been in jail awaiting trial next month on 11 counts of robbery against small businesses in East County from Nov. 20-Dec. 28. Before he escaped, his bail had been set at $150,000. That was revoked Wednesday.

His trial on the robberies was rescheduled for May 4.
