Share

It was nearly four years ago that County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez delivered a speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention that won praise from former President Richard M. Nixon and helped mark him as a rising player in the party.

Now, as the political season heats up, Vasquez is again preparing for a visible role at the GOP convention in Houston, to be held Aug. 17 through 20.

Vasquez announced Wednesday that he has been appointed a vice chairman of the convention’s Platform Committee, the panel that will help determine party positions on key issues. The committee will hold hearings around the country in advance of the convention, beginning March 30 in San Diego.

“In college and in high school, I studied a great deal about party platforms and positions,” Vasquez said in an interview. “I never envisioned I’d be doing something like this. . . . It’s certainly an honor.”

Heading the committee will be Sen. Don Nickles of Oklahoma, with Gov. John Ashcroft of Missouri and Rep. Bill McCollum of Florida as c o-chairmen.
